May be some one who has already renewed their AP can answer this:
I am about to renew my AP. What will be the start date on the new AP. Is it the date after the current AP expires(like with EAD) or the date the renewal application is approved. Appreciate any responses.

Few things to add:
1) You need to determine sufficient coverage. If you have a mortgage and children, $500K is the minimum. A 30 year term non-smoker age 35+ should be about $350/year. You usually get a discount if you buy a policy for your wife too. If you try to purchase a whole life for $500K coverage, the premium will be ridiculous...probably $1500 to $2K/year.
2) I always remind myself of the KISS rule (Keep it simple stupid). If you want protection buy term insurance, if you want to save/invest buy stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc. Don't try to mix them.
3) To protect your familiy, think of the 3 areas: Death, disability and illness. Dying is the easy part...you die, your family gets a lump sum. That's not correct. Such frequent reentry after exit will certainly lead to suspicion by an Immigration office at PoE. In fact the intent of 10 year visitor visa is not 10 years of permanent residence. If there is no convincing reason for such frequent reentry you are mostly likely looking at serious interrogation or deportation at the airport. There is no substitute for a GC for your parents if you want them to be with you permanently in the US. Visitor visa has a specific purpose and intent, abusing it could put your folks serious trouble. The other issue with such long term stay on Visitor Visa is - medical insurance - unfortunately there is no good, reliable and comprehensive medical insurance that covers elderly visitors on short trip.

But I do agree with you 100% it is a far dream that India can ever be at the top of the world. It is my personal opinion too. Bottomline is they do not want to give us Greencard just use us and fool us. I am sure this 485 being current is big melodramatic thing.
And it is only 1 year of filing I-485 ( can i take comfort that many others have been stuck 2 year, 3 year etc ). ANother reason why visa numbers got wasted is that many fellas got stuck in namecheck ( Ask many of the Indian/Chinese/Russian folks ).
I don't what crappy way they use to separate good from bad.

I agreee with the spirit of things - that multiple ways of expressing anguish, disgust, frustration is required.
While we have to keep generating funds and doing the lobbying, the frustration of the members must be "used".
Here is my suggestion (and this was mentioned by someone earlier also) - let's send the criss-crossed and blackened photocopies of our degrees, patents, publications etc. to the congress and other authorities as a symbol of how useless these are becoming as we wait for GCs. We can coordinate the event such that everyone's reaches at around the same time.
Again, all I am saying is that we can do multiple things to gain attention and make our point, and these can happen simultaneously with the other activities ongoing at the State chapter level.

Visa recapture cannot happen with an administrative fix. Anyone who is telling you that visa recapture can happen by some admin fix or through a lawsuit is simply lying, possibly just to grab your attention. We have been repeatedly told by the administration that recapture cannot happen by an executive order.
A few days back a group of disorganized folks were writing to USCIS Director asking him to recapture. That is just a waste of time because CIS director cannot do recapture. Even Presidential executive order cannot recapture unused visas. It has to be done legislative because recapture will require change in the law.
We do not mean to dampen your enthusiasm but please do not expect for something that cannot happen. Recapture cannot happen with an administrative fix. In this admin fix initiative we are working on other possible good provisions that are possible.

Dude I think you are thinking too much of it. USCIS is an organization that goes by a process. If they have a pending application, they have to process it. they decided in the summer of 2007 that they will hire additional contractors and process all the pending applications so that they reach their goal of 4 months processing times of 485.
Why will they waste their resources on your $325 dollars again dude? Is the amount that high that they will reopen the case at the time of finally alloting a visa number, and spend the money/resources on reviewing the case again?
Whatever be the PD, USCIS is all set for a month processing time of 485 by Sept 2009. All cases filed before Jun of this year should have been either pre-adjudicated or denied by that date.

I will just digest and summarise the interesting points:
For illegals who entered the USA before April 5, 2001...
Immediate Adjustment of Status after paying fines and any additional amounts
Must be employed for at least 3 years during the 5 year illegal presence
Employment requirement not applicable to those under 20 years of age
Employment requirement of 3 years can be reduced if proven physical or mental disability like pregnancy
Alien shall not be required to complete employment requirements with the same employer!
OK, I am not going to go on as I will leave the rest of the reading up to you all. But I need to ask this: "The adjustment of status" above... does this mean those illegals don't need to go thru LCA and I-140? Also, they don't even need to stay with the same employer at the time of applying for AOS....
Sounds like a very good deal for these people.
So could someone explain to me why we in the retrogression queue should accept this bill even if it increases H1B and promises to reduce backlogs for GC when illegals who have been here for more than 5 years (many of us also have been here that long) get special treatment? Looks like we are in minority :), I guess people need to be educated about legalities of the immigration system, just because one applies for a green card , or one gets a Green card, he/she does not become part of the country.
Please remember this folks, till you become citizens you are still representing your home country :), and BharatPremi mentioned US of A only expects that you don't indulge in any activities that the government lists as against the US of A, after all we are all here only because the country allowed us in because they perceive there is a need for high skilled labor, letting us contribute and at the same time benefit from this huge economy,we are at their discretion legally, and they can show us the door just as the way it was opened to let us in, just because you are here does not mean you can demand rights :) and call this your home country, that is what the illegals do. I am sorry for sounding so depressing, I witnessed a mass layoff at my company and a lot of my friends (Americans) who are very senior folks were let go, I was spared, somehow that is hurting my conscience, and I am not in a position either to voluntarily give up my job.I want everybody to be happy, and prosper, layoffs reflect the ugly side of capitalism, the weak and old are exploited.

Or for that matter can you legally proove that not applying for US GC is the barometer of patriotism towards India for an Indian?
